Why is This Warning Provided?
California’s Proposition 65 (the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires businesses selling goods into California to provide explicit warnings if a product contains any of over 900 chemicals on the state's list, even when exposures are far below federal safety thresholds and do not pose a direct health hazard under intended use.
Our Material Purity & Skin-Contact Standards
At Pact & Rein, we engineer our gear specifically for direct skin contact, utilizing natural, non-hazardous materials:
- 100% Chromium-Free Vegetable Tanned Leather: Standard commercial leathers rely on chemical chromium salts (Chromium IV / VI) for rapid tanning. In contrast, Pact & Rein exclusively sources vegetable-tanned hides cured over 60 days using organic tree barks, chestnut, and mimosa tannins. Our leather is completely free from chromium tanning agents.
- Medical-Grade 316L Stainless Steel: Where steel components are utilized, we specify surgical 316L stainless steel for maximum biocompatibility and corrosion resistance.
- Solid Sand-Cast Brass Hardware: Our buckles, O-rings, and D-rings are solid brass (copper-zinc alloy). Under California law, any brass alloy may contain microscopic trace amounts of elemental lead, triggering mandatory statutory warnings regardless of actual leaching or skin absorption levels. All brass is hand-filed and sealed.
Safe Care & Handling
To preserve your gear and maintain its protective beeswax finish, keep hardware dry, store in the provided breathable cotton pouch, and periodically treat leather surfaces with organic beeswax conditioner as detailed in our care guidelines.
